October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

17 Oct

It was first observed October 1987 and is an effort to connect people everywhere that are working to end domestic violence.  Many states hold events during October to help raise awareness about domestic violence.  Here is a listing of the activities in Illinois.  I attended the opening of the Survivor Art Exhibit which was at the Budlong Woods Library.  The groups involved were Apna Ghar, Kan-Win, Between Friends, and Heartland Alliance.  All are local Chicago organizations that work with women, particularly immigrant women who might not have anywhere else to turn.

The Art Exhibit will be open to the public until October 22.  All of the art was done by people who have experienced violence in their lives.  The organizations provide art therapy which is used as a healing tool because some people find it easier to express their selves creatively instead of verbally.  Here is a peek at some of the art work.
