To All The Geniuses Who Think Emergency Contraception Is The Abortion Pill You Are About To Be Schooled

28 Mar

Today is the annual day of action for the BACK UP YOUR BIRTH CONTROL  campaign.  This year’s theme is EC=BC.  I guess there are people out there who honestly believe that emergency contraception is the abortion pill.  I have very little tolerance for stupidity and anyone who believes that is stupid.  Why sugarcoat it?

First off, the price of emergency contraception should tip one off to the fact that it is not the abortion pill.  There is a HUGE difference between what emergency contraception costs and what the abortion pill costs.  I’m talking hundreds of dollars worth of difference.

Second, you can get emergency contraception over the counter if you are 18+.  You can’t just walk into a pharmacy or Planned Parenthood for that matter and ask for the abortion pill and be given it.  Go ahead and try and let me know how that goes for you.

Thirdly and most importantly, emergency contraception only works if you aren’t already pregnant.  It acts like a goalie trying to block the other team from scoring.

Since I worked at Planned Parenthood I was trained in all the facts of emergency contraception, but remember I am not a doctor.  I want to stress that emergency contraception is not to be used on a daily basis or even that frequently.  It really should be a back up to condoms or other methods of birth control.  It is not a magic pill.  It is not 100% effective.  Women still end up pregnant after taking it.  The horror!

There are 3 types of emergency contraception that I am knowledgeable in:

  1. Next Choice = this is a generic and therefore the most affordable.  It is most effective up to 72 hours after, but it’s best to take it ASAP.  The effectiveness goes down everyday.  It is also comes in 2 pills.  I was taught to advise women to not follow the included directions.  It’s best to take both pills at the same time so you don’t forget that second pill.
  2. Plan B One-Step = one pill, easy to take, and effective up to 72 hours after.  The effectiveness does decrease daily.
  3. Ella = everyone needs a prescription for this one!  It’s the newest one and therefore the most expensive.   However, it’s effective for up to 5 days and it’s effectiveness does not decrease.

My emergency contraception spiel when dispensing it went a little something like this: “Make sure to take it on a full stomach because it could make you nauseous.  Your period could come sooner than usual or it may be lighter or heavier than usual.  You may have some spotting or bleeding after taking it.  If you don’t get a period, take a pregnancy test”.

Remember, it’s always a good idea to have a back up plan.  Here is an EC cheat sheet  and if you love couponing here is an Ella coupon and a Plan B One-Step coupon.  Or head on over to your nearest Planned Parenthood where it’s usually cheaper than any pharmacy!

George Carlin Was A Feminist

13 Mar

I adore and admire George Carlin.  I think he was a very wise man and will one day share with you his life philosophies, but today is about George Carlin The Feminist.  Some people may find this an outrageous claim, but I’ll prove my point.  Let’s first discuss the above video which is actually just audio.  George talks about rape and claims that rape can be funny depending on the exaggeration.  What he is doing is giving an intro into a discussion about rape, but he does it with a touch humor.  I feel humor is an effective tool for getting people to let their guards down and not put up defenses immediately.  Through his comedy he was able to reach a wide diversified audience.  And when he is joking about rape he is basically saying what the fuck is wrong with this guy?  He is putting the blame on the rapist and not the “victim”.  Oh, and he was completely right about there being a higher incident of rape at the North Pole.

He also jokes about feminists and language and I agree with him on this.  My big issue is with the word girl being used for adult women and how we shouldn’t do it because it infantilizes women.  Many of my female friends use the term such as hey girl or you’re my girl.  And I don’t think there is anything wrong with that.  We aren’t trying to put each other down or be demeaning.   For us it’s a term of affection, a closeness, a bond.  I think women using the term amongst ourselves is ok.  A guy however should never say hey girl to me (or any other woman).  I have a name, use it and if you don’t know it hey hey is not the way to go about it.

This is one of my fave clips of George’s comedy.  He tackles all the issues of abortion with humor!  What’s more entertaining than that?  Everyone should watch this video regardless of their view on abortion.  My favorite moments are when he asks the audience to name 6 ways humans are better than chickens, homosexuals, the Catholics, and how periods make women serial killers.

“We declare war on the things we don’t like about ourselves”.  His observations on our society were so astute.  He was for the people.  He has the perfect solution for homelessness.  He thought golf courses should be turned into housing for the homeless and that it should be referred to as houselessness.  Does that not sound like a feminist to you, a radical feminist at that.  I completely agree that way too much land is used for golf courses and that it is an elitist, sexist, and racist “game”.  Golf is NOT A SPORT.  CHEERLEADING IS A SPORT.  Golf is the fat, white guy’s so called sport.

Even though George passed in 2008 he was always a good judge of character.  He totally got Rush Limbaugh.  I mean, Rush has been married 4 times and doesn’t have any children yet is completely clueless about birth control.

The Anti-Vasectomy Act. Are you serious???

23 Feb

The Anti-Vasectomy Act has been proposed by Georgian Democrat Representative Yasmin Neal .  Is this for real I thought, what is this about?  Yes it’s for real.

When I watched the video proposing the bill I got it.  I understood what she was doing with this Anti-Vasectomy Act.  Initially I thought do we want to be wasting our time doing this?  By “our” I mean the pro-woman sector of society.  So, I showed it to my roommate and we discussed it.  The discussion helped me to figure out my thoughts on it and I support what this politician is doing.   She is bringing attention to the fact that there are laws made regarding the female body, but there aren’t laws made regarding the male body.  And what is the male reaction to this act?  The men are upset!  The men do not want to be told what they can do with their bodies!  What a shocking revelation…people don’t want laws governing what they do to their bodies.

Every time something pops up in the news concerning access to birth control or an abortion law I also always think are you for real, are you really wasting time with this?  Listen, if you don’t want people to have abortions you have to give them birth control.  I mean literally give it to them for free and let them be able to pick up their prescription at any pharmacy.  Condoms should be free too and available everywhere! It has to be easy for people!

Watch this interview by The Young Turks with Yasmin Neal where she explains the reason for the Anti-Vasectomy Act.

It’s about the double standard plain and simple.  Of course, you get response videos like this one which I couldn’t make sense of at all.  The comment section of this video is what most intrigued me.  Here is a stellar gem by NautyKnight (who is probably a middle aged white man who lives with his mom, is overweight, never has sex, and plays WOW all day long, but who am I to judge)

“Women want to play God and nobody should have that power. A woman’s choice should begin and end at the same place it does for men – in the bedroom. If women don’t want to get pregnant then they shouldn’t have sex or they should use birth control or make sure their partner is wearing a condom. Pregnancy through incest and rape are so rare it’s a non-issue. A woman’s personal health is also a non-issue in most pregnancies. Most abortion is done for selfish financial reasons and that’s no excuse!”

*The reason certain people don’t want women to have abortions is about power.  These people are the ones who are power and control hungry, not the women seeking abortions.

*Of course there is always the JUST DON’T HAVE SEX ARGUMENT.  That’s bullshit.

*Use a condom!  Condoms break!  Emergency contraception is not 100% effective.  People still end up pregnant after taking it.

*Use birth control!  Again, just like condoms, birth control is not 100% effective.  During my time working at Planned Parenthood I saw women become pregnant on every single method of birth control. Even the super heavy duty one like the copper IUD Paragard.  We can’t control human bodies, they are a part of nature, it’s like the flower that starts growing in the sidewalk.

*Yes, abortion is done for selfish financial reasons.  You know, logically if you can’t afford something you probably shouldn’t commit to buying it.

What are your thoughts on the Anti-Vasectomy Act? Is it about time? Is it too extreme?

More Ryan Gosling. This Time It’s About Safe Sex

21 Feb

A Ryan Gosling Public Health tumblr was created and these are my favorite gems.  It’s always refreshing to have a good looking guy saying smart things even if they aren’t really his words.

Hey girl yeah comprehensive sex education.  Makes sense to me.  Does it make sense to you?  Teach people about their bodies and let them make educated decisions for themselves.  I think we should start teaching comprehensive sex education in preschool.  They do it in the Netherland countries.  At that age it isn’t even awkward for kids.  Starting them off young is best.

Let me give you an example of why comprehensive sex education needs to be taught.  My brother, who is in his senior year of college, told me a story of being asked by one of his friends to buy emergency contraception.  He asked his friend what it was needed for and the response was because him and his girlfriend had oral sex and he ejaculated and she swallowed and she needed to take emergency contraception so she wouldn’t get pregnant.  WTF?  This is the moranic shit that happens when kids aren’t even taught the basic biology of how their bodies work.  You can’t get pregnant by swallowing sperm!  No way, no how!

People think feminism is just about abortion.  It’s not, but it may seem that way because every month some politician thinks of some brilliant new law to limit or stop abortion.  I don’t know why this goes on.  How stupid are people?  There are over 7 billion people in this world.  How many more do you think this planet can support??  Let’s be logical about resources now.

Public health isn’t just about physical health it’s about being mentally healthy too.  And a buff, shirtless Ryan Gosling telling you to love yourself doesn’t hurt.

Rick Perry “the most pro-life governor in the United States of America right now”

7 Oct

Rick Perry “the most pro-life governor in the United States of America right now,” proudly states the pastor Robert Jeffress.  He introduced Perry at the Values Voter Summit last night.  If you check out Perry’s website it appears his main focus is on restoring the economy and helping people to get jobs.  His “issues” weren’t abortion or homosexuality.  Instead he’s a little more subtle and his tagline is “Rick Perry Champion of Conservative Principles”.

“Jeffress brought audience members to their feet when he said that Perry stood up “to defund that slaughterhouse for the unborn, known as Planned Parenthood.”

Now, having been a patient and an employee of Planned Parenthood I am appalled by this statement.  And as an informed feminist I’m going to call this statement for what it is-BULLSHIT.  Bullshit plain and simple.  Why are these white men trying to control women’s bodies?  Why should they have power over what a person, particulary a woman can do with her body?  How would they like it if laws were being made about what they could do with their bodies?

The reason these men want power over women’s bodies is because they want to control women with fear.  They are trying to make women “behave” according to their standards.  Their standards consist of only married, heterosexual sex.  Who cares if you have 6 kids? They are hoping you will eventually be so tired because you have 6 kids you won’t have the time or energy for sex anymore, which is how you will prevent further pregnancies.  Or maybe at this point your uterus has fallen out of your vagina and you won’t be able to carry any more pregnancies (I’m not even joking about this).

Another reason these men don’t want women having abortions is because they want “brown” babies.  These white men need “brown” babies to grow up and fight their wars for them.  They want these “brown” babies to grow up and then be imprisoned so they can still have slaves to perform free labor.

I’ll leave you with the wise words of George Carlin to consider.

Pregnancy Testing 101

4 Oct

While working at Planned Parenthood I perfomed tons of pregnancy tests.  During my training I learned some tips and the most important question to ask.  First thing first and I think the MOST IMPORTANT is purchase your test from the dollar store.  You read me right.  Go buy your test from the f**king dollar store.  All tests are the same.  The tests that “claim” to detect your pregnancy early are MARKETING GIMMICKS.  Be smarter than that.  The most important question to ask before perfoming a test is:

Has it been 2 full weeks since the day you could have gotten pregnant?

  • If it hasn’t then don’t waste your time and your money.  It takes 2 full weeks for a pregnancy to show up on a urine test.
  • I don’t care when your last period was or if you haven’t gotten one for months.  If you’ve taken a preg test and it came back negative and it’s been 3 months since your last period you aren’t pregnant!  Something else is going on and you should definitely make a doctor’s appointment.
  • If you are having unprotected sex all the time and have no idea when you could have gotten pregnant JUST STOP NOW!  You can either abstain for 2 full weeks (some people are horrified by just the suggestion of this) or you can use condoms for 2 full weeks and then take a test.  And STOP BEING A FOOL!  Unless of course you are trying to get pregnant.  I sometimes forget that there are people who want to be pregnant.
  • Make sure to set a timer for the amount of time the test is suppose to run for and to read the test as soon as the timer goes off.  Timing is crucial.  If you read a test 5 minutes after when you should have you could get a false positive.  And then you’re calling Planned Parenthood to schedule your abortion appointment.  One of the 1st things that is done when you arrive for your appointment-after filling out all the f**king paperwork, which someone then has to put in the computer, and then make a patient chart-is take a pregnancy test.  Let me just say that when this test comes back negative you are now the staff’s least favorite person.
