The Anti-Vasectomy Act. Are you serious???

23 Feb

The Anti-Vasectomy Act has been proposed by Georgian Democrat Representative Yasmin Neal .  Is this for real I thought, what is this about?  Yes it’s for real.

When I watched the video proposing the bill I got it.  I understood what she was doing with this Anti-Vasectomy Act.  Initially I thought do we want to be wasting our time doing this?  By “our” I mean the pro-woman sector of society.  So, I showed it to my roommate and we discussed it.  The discussion helped me to figure out my thoughts on it and I support what this politician is doing.   She is bringing attention to the fact that there are laws made regarding the female body, but there aren’t laws made regarding the male body.  And what is the male reaction to this act?  The men are upset!  The men do not want to be told what they can do with their bodies!  What a shocking revelation…people don’t want laws governing what they do to their bodies.

Every time something pops up in the news concerning access to birth control or an abortion law I also always think are you for real, are you really wasting time with this?  Listen, if you don’t want people to have abortions you have to give them birth control.  I mean literally give it to them for free and let them be able to pick up their prescription at any pharmacy.  Condoms should be free too and available everywhere! It has to be easy for people!

Watch this interview by The Young Turks with Yasmin Neal where she explains the reason for the Anti-Vasectomy Act.

It’s about the double standard plain and simple.  Of course, you get response videos like this one which I couldn’t make sense of at all.  The comment section of this video is what most intrigued me.  Here is a stellar gem by NautyKnight (who is probably a middle aged white man who lives with his mom, is overweight, never has sex, and plays WOW all day long, but who am I to judge)

“Women want to play God and nobody should have that power. A woman’s choice should begin and end at the same place it does for men – in the bedroom. If women don’t want to get pregnant then they shouldn’t have sex or they should use birth control or make sure their partner is wearing a condom. Pregnancy through incest and rape are so rare it’s a non-issue. A woman’s personal health is also a non-issue in most pregnancies. Most abortion is done for selfish financial reasons and that’s no excuse!”

*The reason certain people don’t want women to have abortions is about power.  These people are the ones who are power and control hungry, not the women seeking abortions.

*Of course there is always the JUST DON’T HAVE SEX ARGUMENT.  That’s bullshit.

*Use a condom!  Condoms break!  Emergency contraception is not 100% effective.  People still end up pregnant after taking it.

*Use birth control!  Again, just like condoms, birth control is not 100% effective.  During my time working at Planned Parenthood I saw women become pregnant on every single method of birth control. Even the super heavy duty one like the copper IUD Paragard.  We can’t control human bodies, they are a part of nature, it’s like the flower that starts growing in the sidewalk.

*Yes, abortion is done for selfish financial reasons.  You know, logically if you can’t afford something you probably shouldn’t commit to buying it.

What are your thoughts on the Anti-Vasectomy Act? Is it about time? Is it too extreme?

About Chicago Abortion Fund

Chicago Abortion Fund (CAF) fights to overturn economic barriers to reproductive choice. Through direct service and education/advocacy, CAF assists low-income women in obtaining safe abortion services by providing clinic referrals, negotiated discounts and financial assistance. While we are unable to directly assist all the women in need, we work to extend choice to all low-income women by making the issue of economic access a priority on the agenda of policy makers.

If you are in Chicago and would like to watch our show “The A Word” live, tune in at 8pm on the last Wednesday of every month, public access CAN-TV 21.

Would you like some eggnog and a condom?

19 Dec

Every holiday party should have a bowl of condoms next to the bowl of spiked eggnog. A little known fact is that there is an increase in unplanned pregnancies around the holiday season.  This can be attributed to a combination of people getting cozy indoors due to the colder weather and lots of parties to celebrate the season which leads to lots of merrymaking.  People get drunk and silly and inevitably accidents happen.

A good host is a responsible host and thinks of their guests wellbeing.  A really good host will provide a mix of male and female condoms.  A good guest that plans on doing their merrymaking at the host’s abode always finds a towel to lay down…NO ONE likes to find a surprise wet spot, especially one that isn’t their own.  Be courteous, be merry, and use a condom!

The holidays are a busy time for abortions.

Baby Killer

8 Nov

Baby killer.  That’s what my sister calls me whenever she gets mad at me.  I guess it’s intended to hurt my feelings?  It doesn’t.  In a recent text message conversation she turned on me and called me a baby killer, the devil, and said I needed to go to church.  Excuse me, but when was the last time you set foot in a church my dear?  I told her to watch some George Carlin; it would make her feel a lot better about life.

She calls me a baby killer because I worked at Planned Parenthood.  Why would she think that term would offend me then?  I thought being a pro-baby killer was a prerequisite for the job.  Apparently it’s not because Planned Parenthood (in Chicago) hires employees that think abortion is wrong unless it’s because of rape.  *Gasp*, tis true.  How fucked up is that?

Actually, I didn’t even work in the abortion clinic at Planned Parenthood.  I worked in the family planning clinic which meant the main part of my job was counseling women on birth control to prevent pregnancy.  The other part of my job did include what is called options counseling.  This is provided to women who come in and test positive for pregnancy.

On their intake sheet there is a handy dandy section where they can mark what they want to do about the pregnancy.  1- Continue the pregnancy, 2-Terminate the pregnancy, 3-Adoption, 4-Undecided, or 5-Discuss all options.  Most women know what they want to do before they even come in for the test.   So, if they want to continue the pregnancy I would talk to them about proper prenatal care and applying for Medicaid to cover it.  For adoption I would give them a referral to the Cradle, an adoption agency.

For those that want to terminate, are undecided, or want to discuss all options what I’ve found is those women just really want to know what is involved with the abortion procedure and the difference between the 2 types of abortion procedures.  Any woman considering an abortion I ALWAYS RECOMMEND the surgical procedure with sedation.  Trust me it’ll be the best decision you ever made.

Rick Perry “the most pro-life governor in the United States of America right now”

7 Oct

Rick Perry “the most pro-life governor in the United States of America right now,” proudly states the pastor Robert Jeffress.  He introduced Perry at the Values Voter Summit last night.  If you check out Perry’s website it appears his main focus is on restoring the economy and helping people to get jobs.  His “issues” weren’t abortion or homosexuality.  Instead he’s a little more subtle and his tagline is “Rick Perry Champion of Conservative Principles”.

“Jeffress brought audience members to their feet when he said that Perry stood up “to defund that slaughterhouse for the unborn, known as Planned Parenthood.”

Now, having been a patient and an employee of Planned Parenthood I am appalled by this statement.  And as an informed feminist I’m going to call this statement for what it is-BULLSHIT.  Bullshit plain and simple.  Why are these white men trying to control women’s bodies?  Why should they have power over what a person, particulary a woman can do with her body?  How would they like it if laws were being made about what they could do with their bodies?

The reason these men want power over women’s bodies is because they want to control women with fear.  They are trying to make women “behave” according to their standards.  Their standards consist of only married, heterosexual sex.  Who cares if you have 6 kids? They are hoping you will eventually be so tired because you have 6 kids you won’t have the time or energy for sex anymore, which is how you will prevent further pregnancies.  Or maybe at this point your uterus has fallen out of your vagina and you won’t be able to carry any more pregnancies (I’m not even joking about this).

Another reason these men don’t want women having abortions is because they want “brown” babies.  These white men need “brown” babies to grow up and fight their wars for them.  They want these “brown” babies to grow up and then be imprisoned so they can still have slaves to perform free labor.

I’ll leave you with the wise words of George Carlin to consider.
